Hi 6th grade students! I am so excited to be working with you again this year. We will be studying some very important subjects this year using technology. Safety, Netiquette, Copyright and Ethics are just a few. This is the section where I will post all things related to technology when you are working with me. Can't wait for the fun to begin! April 25-29 Super Bowl Commercials
We have been talking about advertising, adverstising techniques and how all media is targeting certain audiences. Today, using the avertising technique page you will go though several commercials and name the technique being used. You will post results on the 6th grade blog. For example, if you are working on the Darth Vader commerical, you should write the name of the commercial and tell what technique is being used. Don't forget to include what is being marketed or sold. You need to justify your answer. In other words support the technique by what is happening in the commercial. We will do one together so you get the hang of it. The Superbowl Ad link and the 6th grade blog link is below.
Have fun!

MEDIA LITERACY
March 13-April 18

We wil spend the next few weeks talking about the Media. The word media has several defintions. We can talk about these definitions but will focus mainly on commercialism and how commercials and televison target consumers to gain power and influence over us. This sounds a little sinister doesn't it? Realistically, we just need to be informed consumers. This means we will be learning about the tricks and techniques advertisers use to get us to buy products and services. The culminating activity will be to evaluate this year's superbowl commercials.
First take this online quiz to see how much you know!

http://www.pbs.org/teachers/media_lit/quiz.html
After this spend some time reading about advertising techniques on the following page. You will get together in small groups and work on the worksheet. Try and figure out who owns the logos and the slogans.

NEXT: Watch video and respond to the writing prompt on our 6th grade blog posted on March 13th and called Media Literacy. Refer to the MediaLit6th file above if you forget the terms for how advertisers try to reel us in and buy their product or service.
Remember! "

We all need to be more media literate and be able to read the messages that are presented to us via advertisements and the media. This clip discusses some of the images presented in the media, and how they can affect our thoughts and actions."
